HISTORY

In 1974, a group of visionaries founded the Wichita County Heritage Society with the goal of saving the heritage of Wichita County. From its inception, the Society has striven to be a strong influence in the community in the name of historic preservation. While our accomplishments are many, such as the Kemp-Kell Depot (Route Building), the Littlest Skyscraper, and the Holt Hotel, our future goals are just as great. Preservation starts at home. It demands perseverance, passion, and patience. Wichita County Heritage Society and its membership are focused on excellence in all of these areas.

OUR MISSION

Inspire and educate the community to engage in preservation through the Kell House Heritage Center

THE KELL HOUSE

The Kell House is one of the most historically and architecturally significant buildings in Wichita Falls. The Museum features distinctive architecture designed by the local firm of Jones and Orlopp, original family furnishings, textiles, decorative arts, and historic costumes. Guided tours of this local, state, and national landmark provide a fascinating history of this area’s early settlement and of the Kell family.

PAST ENDEAVORS

Establishing the Depot Square Historic District, working with the City of Wichita Falls to develop the Lankmark Commission, and working with the City to initiate a Texas Downtown Development. We succeeded in underwriting restoration of the Historic Holt Hotel, rescued the Kemp-Kell Depot from destruction, saved the iconic Littlest Skyscraper, and recently stabilized the Old Post Office.

CURRENT FOCUS

Is the restoration of the Kell House. This magnificent and historic House Museum and gardens are the window into Wichita Falls’ past. Area children have the opportunity to visit and experience the magic of Santa House at Christmas. The Fourth of July brings and old fashioned celebration on the house grounds. While the Heritage Society serves as the guardian for this century old crown jewel, she truly belongs to all North Texas.
